¿Qué es el agua alcalina?

El agua puede ser ácida o alcalina, en función de su pH. El pH hace referencia al hidrógeno potencial o “potencia del hidrógeno”, es decir, la cantidad iones de hidrógeno contenidos en la sustancia. Este pH se mide en una escala del 0 al 14, siendo 7 un punto neutro, menos de 7 un punto ácido y más de 7 un punto alcalino.

Considerando esto, se dice que el agua es alcalina cuando tiene un nivel de pH más alto que el agua potable normal. Esta última tiene un pH neutro de 7; la alcalina, por su parte, alcanza un nivel de pH entre 8 y 9.

Debido a estas propiedades, su consumo se ha promovido como complemento para normalizar el pH del organismo cuando tiende a ser ácido. Recordemos que el exceso de acidez en la sangre es uno de los factores relacionados con el desarrollo de enfermedades.

¿Por qué preparar agua alcalina?

El tema del consumo de agua alcalina es bastante controversial. Mientras que algunos de sus defensores la promueven como alternativa para prevenir y combatir enfermedades asociadas al exceso de acidez, otros ponen en duda sus propiedades.

De acuerdo con la Clínica Mayo, aún se requieren evidencias científicas para comprobar que, efectivamente, esta agua puede neutralizar el ácido del torrente sanguíneo. No obstante, su consumo podría ser beneficioso para la salud ósea, digestiva y cardiovascular.

De hecho, en una investigación del año 2012 se pudo determinar que el consumo de agua alcalina carbonatada con un pH de 8.8 puede ayudar a desactivar la pepsina, un tipo de enzima que es detonante del reflujo ácido.

A pesar de la falta de evidencias científicas, quienes promueven la ingesta de esta creen que puede aportar muchos otros beneficios. Estos incluyen:

Este método para hacer agua alcalina no es tan popular, pero muchos creen que funciona de manera similar a los demás. Consiste solamente en poner a hervir el agua durante 5 minutos. En su estado normal, el pH del agua no pasa de 7,2. Cuando se hierve y se enfría, su nivel sube hasta 8,4.

3. Receta de agua alcalina con bicarbonato de sodio

Uno de los ingredientes más populares para normalizar el pH del cuerpo es el bicarbonato de sodio. Por eso, en este caso será el protagonista para hacer agua alcalina casera. Sus propiedades regulan el exceso de acidez y, de paso, alivia molestias digestivas.

Ingredientes

  • 1 cucharadita de bicarbonato de sodio (5 g).
  • 1 vaso de agua (200 ml).

¿Es seguro consumir agua alcalina?

El problema que muchos profesionales de la salud tienen con el agua alcalina no es su seguridad, sino las afirmaciones con respecto a sus bondades. Por eso, siempre y cuando se tome en cantidades moderadas, ingerir este líquido es seguro y no produce efectos indeseados.

Recordemos que no hay suficiente evidencia científica para apoyar su capacidad de prevenir enfermedades. No obstante, no se deben descartar del todo sus propiedades.
